Twin Animators

This is an old photo of twins named Marylin and Madilyne
Woods. It was emailed to someone at work to show us. It turns out that they were animators/assistants in the 1940s at Warner Brothers. That is so cool to see other twins working in animation together, especially women in the 1940s! We’re totally fascinated by this, but we can’t find any info about them. Does anyone know about these twins?

November meeting notes:

Medical Animation:
This past WIA meeting we had Katy and Katy talk about the work that they did before hand and show some of their fascinating work that they have done for Medical Animation using both 2D and 3D animation.
The following are the notes that they shared with us:

December Event:
Priscialla Olson, a local animator, will be sharing her animation with us on Friday, December 7th @ 6pm in the screening room 402 on the 4th floor of the 1104 S Wabash building.

January Meeting:
Our next meeting is in January and we will have Patrick Cheng give a presentation on Flash. The date isn't set yet. Check the blog for updates.

Other Events:
Possible field trip to the Virtual Reality Lab and maybe a trip to Calabash.

Goofy Questions:
Kristine has e-mailed the questions to the producer, Tamara Boutcher, of the Goofy short of "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" We will post the Q&A here.

Flip Books:
I am just going to shoot and post what has been done and if you guys still want to include yours let me know when it will be done and I will do another composite.

Questions

OK! So I emailed Tamara and she said I can email her our questions. Now, if I had read my email earlier I could have met up with her Sunday. Apparently North Western University has got something going on, cause they've got her presenting Thursday morning! She's not scheduled to do anything at Columbia. Anyway, send me your questions and I'll work em' all into a nice list and email it.

We just wanted to remind everyone about the Goofy short being played before the Three Robbers tomorrow morning at the Davis Theatre at 10:30. Flip Books

Hi all! Okay so I know that during the summer we agreed to do flip books, so I was wondering if any more people have done flip books? I would like to collect them in the next WIA meeting on November 14th. If you have done one and would like to do another please feel free to. Just in case, the flip books should be 8.5 X 5.5, enter left and exit right, also please number your pages and write how many frames the pose is going to hold for, so when I shoot them, there won't be a mix up. Thank you.

Meeting with Producer of "How to Hook Up Your Home Theatre"

I recently emailed both director's of the new goofy short that is playing at the Chicago Children's International Film Festival. I actually got a response from the Producer, Tamara Boutcher, of the short. We get to meet and chat with her after the screening on the 20th! Here's the email she sent regarding a possibility to have an email chat with the directors of the short:

Hi kristine, Stevie forwarded your mail on to me. I am the Producer of "how to hook up your home theatre" the short that will be screening at the festival. Unfortunately, the directors will not be attending the scrreening on the 20th, but I will be there and would love to say hello to your group. Let's talk then about setting up an email "chat" with stevie and kevin. We may also be talking to some colleges in the area and I will have more up to date information about that on the 20th too. Thanks for your interest in our project. Cheers! --tamara

So WIA chicago- if you are attending the screening on that Saturday morning, please let me know so I get a count. I will post directions to the theatre here later this week, it's actually at the DAVIS theatre on the North end of the city. See you all at the screening and start thinking of questions you might want to ask!
I've updated my blog with an illustration for Illustration Friday! And you can vote for it if you'd like....

Oct. Meeting Notes

Thanks to everyone who came to the WIA meeting today. Here are some dates to mark on your calendars:

Sat. October 13th- A group of us are going to see Animation Nations, animation shorts playing with the Chicago International Film Festival. (5:30 show) http://www.chicagofilmfestival.org/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CIFFSite.woa/3/wa/pages/Shorts

Sat. Oct. 20th- We’re going to the Children’s International Film Festival to see the 10:30 show of The Three Robbers with a new Goofy short, How to Hook up Your Home Theater, playing before it. (Check back here for exciting news regarding that!)

November 7th- Bill Plympton is having a preview of his nearly complete film, Idiots and Angels, at the Music Box. Chicago will be the first audience to see this film before it’s sent off to Sundance. It is a bit late though, but should be well worth it! 10pm

We decided not to have a sketchcrawl for October because the month is already full, so let’s have one in November. Please think of indoor locations for the next sketchcrawl.

One idea we had is to have a bit of “show and tell” time at the end of each meeting. Anyone who has anything they’d like to show the group is welcome to at the end of each meeting. It’d be great to see what everyone else is working on. Also, if anyone would like to give tutorials/demonstrations, please let us know. We might have a Flash demonstration at the next meeting by Patrick Cheng.

We’re also in the process of scheduling a guest speaker, Priscilla Olson, to come back and show us more of her animation. It should be in November or December.

The next meeting will be at the same time and same place on November 14th.

Sunday, October 7, 2007

Meeting this Wednesday

Remember the October meeting is this Wednesday at 6pm at Columbia College in room 401H at the 1104 S. Wabash building.

Is anyone interested in kind of doing a "show and tell" type thing after each meeting? Anyone who's interested can show what animation or art projects they're working on.

Chicago International Film Festival

It's fall and that means the Chicago International Film Festival is back! It started October 4 and runs until the 17th. Who wants to go see the animation shorts Saturday, October 13th? (5:30pm)

Animation Nations-
Dark events force Bill to evaluate his life in Everything Will Be Okay. 1977 follows a girl's difficult search for her identity. Graham's unholy fantasy gets the better of him in For the Love of God. Entropy and order have it out in Spontaneous Generation. A stormy night in Looking Glass makes a young girl question if she's safe at home. Art's Desire allows famous paintings to come to life. Sleeping Betty shows a young girl who just wants to sleep in peace. An old man's experience with a Fascist attack is retold in The Battle of Cable Street. Flutter flies along with a young boy who runs off to explore the world. Yours Truly is a high-octane thriller with noir icons. Rowlandson Rides Again celebrates the art of Thomas Rowlandson in truly randy fashion. Total running time: 87 minutes.

Bill Plympton's Secret Premier

We just recieved this email from Gabe, the guy who organized the John&Bill Show:

IDIOTS & ANGELS...a dark comedy about a man's battle for his soul...the latest and greatest from Bill Plympton. At The John & Bill Show earlier this summer, Bill previewed a pencil test of his work-in-progress, Idiots & Angels. Most of you reading this were at the show, and, if you recall, the preview left all of us slack-jawed. This could very well be Plympton's most visually demanding work yet.

This screening is happening ONLY in Chicago, and ONLY one night; and in no small part it is thanks to all of you who came out for The John & Bill Show. SO...Bill is returning to Chicago on Wednesday, November 7th to the Music Box for an exclusive test screening of the nearly complete film. This is the first (and only) public screening of Idiots & Angels before he sends it off to Sundance. After the screening, Bill is going to hang out and talk with you about the movie. In his words, "I want to know what's wrong with it." He wants feedback to help polish and complete the film for entry into Sundance this year. It's not often (if ever???) that fans get a chance to be a part of the creative process, so if you dig Bill's work, I hope you can make it out.

You can get your tickets through Ticketweb or http://www.gabelevinsonpresents.com/. It's only $7 in advance, or $10 at the door.

For more info on Idiots & Angels, check out this story just published in The Hollywood Reporter.By the by...with The John & Bill Show, you saw posters, articles, ridiculous amounts of emails and MySpace bulletins...but keeping in the vein of this "secret" show, you're not going to see or hear too much about it beyond this email (maybe one more closer to the show) and some postcards drifting about town. PLEASE TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW. Let's pack the house with Plymptoons freaks! Forward this email along to anyone and everyone who may be interested. This is a pretty underground marketing campaign and the best advertising is going to come from you. Let's show Bill some Chicago love and if we can fill the seats, I think it will be a strong argument for Bill to want to bring more nights like this into our home.

Hitchcock Exhibit

Casting a Shadow: Creating the Alfred Hitchcock Film is a new exhibit at Northwestern University's Mary and Leigh Block Museum. It opened last week and will stay there until Dec. 9.

"Through drawings, paintings, storyboards, and production documents, this exhibition explores a film making process that thrived on teamwork, with the director's colleagues contributing critical ideas and Hitchcock engaged in creative collaboration frame by frame. The exhibition, which will include computer and multimedia technology, will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, a film series with speakers, and a symposium."

Lets see the FIRST Disney Short to be Directed by a Woman!

OK so I got a hold of the Chicago International Children's Film Festival screening schedule for this year! It's not online YET but the library had one of the handy paper schedules.

I came across two things that should be seen, one of which is a landmark short of sorts.

Proposed Date and time of Event:

October 20th
10:30 a.m.
(that's a Saturday)
Davis Theatre
4614 N. Lincoln Ave.

The film we'd get to see is called The Three Robbers. There's a official trailer courtesy of youtube here.

Itlooks quite beautiful. Of course when they screen it here, it will be translated.
It was recently mentioned in Cartoon Brew here

Even better, they're screening the new Goofy short "How to Hook up Your Home Theatre" before it. This short was made in the old short style, and it's gotten great reviews. And oddly enough, it's the FIRST DISNEY CARTOON directed by a WOMAN!! Maybe we can find a way to get her to talk to us? An interview perhaps? Even an interview/Q&A by email?

Stevie Wermers-Skelton is her name and she directed the short with Kevin Deters
Stevie's "resume" and contact info
Here's a link to a bit about her and Kevin Deters, courtesy of Ottawa Film Fest. It's at the bottom of the page

They both will be in town doing a workshop for the Children's Film Festival on October 27th from 11 am to 1 pm. I'm not sure but maybe we can see if they can do a quick q&a and see if the animation department at columbia will let us have it there.

Cartoon Brew's article on Ottawa & the Goofy Short

And then there's this wonderful interview with Andreas Deja and Mark Henn who animated this short here

We should buy tickets in advance

Children's film festival Oct. 15thish!

And don't forget the Children's film festival!!

http://www.cicff.org/

It's coming up soon and they usually have some quality animated films. They've moved their screenings to a theatre up on Lincoln Ave in Lincoln Square which is pretty easy to get to.

Chicago International Film Festival animation/anime list

There are three anime films this year as part of the Chicago International Film Festival which starts October 4th.

This is the Anime 2007 page: http://www.chicagofilmfestival.org/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CIFFSite.woa/5/wa/pages/AnimeFocus

And then there's the animation shorts, none of which I've seen except for the first one in the list:

Anime Hotel

This is a newly remodeled hotel in San Francisco that I plan on finding a way and reason to stay at someday in the future. It's Anime inspired decorations and in room gaming sound pretty awesome.

A friend of mine needs some help!

My friend is a music teacher and she's got a really small group of kids from California coming into town. I'm unavailable to help that weekend. So here's her email to me, please let me know if any of you are interested in helping out, I'll give you her telephone number.

I am interested in having the St. Mary’s students participate in an art project at Lincoln Park Zoo. I’d like it to start off with a description of what the artist does when he/she decides to draw animals. Then we spend some time in the zoo drawing. Right now, we have six 6th-8th grade students signed up. I’ve had a few more parents and students express interest. This art program could be on Friday, Sept. 28 or Sunday, Sept. 30. On Sunday, we need to be at O’Hare by 4:00 so we should be done at the zoo by 2:30. I am in the process of scheduling two other arts events so any flexibility in their schedules will be most appreciated. Otherwise, I’ll fit together as much as I can!

Like I mentioned on the phone, normally we don’t travel with this few students so we are on a very tight budget and a free art lesson would be most appreciated. We’re taking the trip this time because 3 of the kids are playing in VanderCook’s Middle School HonorFest.

If your friends are interested, would you please ask them to call me

Sept. meeting notes

Hi Everyone!

We had a great Sept. meeting yesterday. We are looking for ideas to raise money for our group. If anyone has any ideas, please post your thoughts here, or bring them to the next meeting.

At the meeting we mentioned two places online to take classes. Here are the links if anyone wants to check them out: Schoolism and Animation Mentor

The next SketchCrawl will be on Sat. Sept. 22nd at 1pm in Millennium Park. We’ll meet by the Crown Fountains (the two large fountains with the spitting faces).

We’re also planning to have another night to continue the second part of Pricilla Olson’s animation. Once we have the time and location, we'll be posting the information here.

At the end of the meeting we watched The Artsiders, a short documentary about Chicago artists. It was interesing to see the variety of artists in Chicago.

The next meeting will be on Wed. Oct. 10th at 6pm at Columbia College in room 401H at the 1104 S. Wabash building.

Exhibition

For those who aren't on the WIA mailing list, this was sent out by Deanna Morse:

Hi WIA Folks -

I wanted to let you know about a show in Chicago this summer. “Stories to be Looked at, Pictures to be Read,” is a juried exhibition at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery, in the River North District, at 325 W. Huron, Chicago – until August 18th.

I’m a member of Women in Animation, Chicago. I live in Michigan and teach at Grand Valley State University. I have a piece in the show, called Time Flights. It includes two videos about nature. “Postcards From My Backyard” is a time-lapse video of seasonal change, shot over a year, scored to my own musical soundscape. “Seasonal Spree” takes a bird interaction, and slows it down for analysis, using After Effects. Eight other artists are in the show.

If you get a chance, please visit my exhibit in Chicago this summer.

Thanks! and best wishes-

Deanna Morse

FLIP BOOK REMINDER

Hello again. Here is an update on the flip books. I have collected four flip books already and they all look pretty good. Also, it turns out that I will be working in the Animation cage until the end of July, so that provides extra time. Let me know when you guys can drop them off at the animation department so I can give someone a heads up if I am not around. Thanks.
*************************************
Hi all! For those who are doing the flip books, if you are finished with them can you please bring them to Columbia College as was previously posted, because the Summer semester is almost over so I won't have access to the lunch boxes. The last day will be July 13th. So if possible please bring them in. You can either drop them off at the Animation Cage or Animation Office. Thanks!

Free Museum passes....

And if you happen to have a chicago library card you can get into most of the museums free. EACH library in chicago has a rentable pass that you can keep for a WEEK. I know it says KIDS but it actually works on adults too.

Wed Meeting Notes

We had a good meeting Wednesday at Columbia College. We planned our next sketchcrawl for Sat. July 21st at noon at the north entrance of the Field Museum. We’re also making it our next meeting as well. http://www.fieldmuseum.org/plan_visit/default.htm If it’s raining, we’ll go draw in the museum. Otherwise, we will draw outside.

Amada started collecting flipbooks that have been done so far. She shot 2 of them back to back on the lunchbox, and they looked great together! If any of you did flipbooks, or still want to do one, or do another one, you still have time. When they’re done, they can be dropped off at the animation floor at Columbia College- 4th floor - 1104 S. Wabash. You can drop them off with Kevin, the secretary in the animation office, or at the cage with a TA. Just tell them it is for Amada. Otherwise, you can bring it to the sketchcrawl.

Oh, someone said that the Art Institute has free evenings on Thursdays and Fridays from 5-9. (until August 31) http://www.artic.edu/aic/visitor_info/

At the meeting, we also talked about the screening Friday night, Animation at the Portage. There seemed to be lots of interest. We didn’t meet as a WIA group last night, but we did run into each other. It was a great turnout! It seemed like everyone in the Chicago animation community turned out to support it last night. Among the films shown was WIA member, Lisa Barcy’s film, Mermaid.

Hope to see you tonight at the sneak peak of Ratatouille! Otherwise, we’ll see you at the sketchcrawl!

1. Found out that there's an early screening of Ratatouille on Saturday night! AMC River East has it, might also be at other theatres. Anyway, suggest ya buy your tickets in advance!

2. Cartoonbrew.com is posting that that Surf's up penguin movie isn't the type of movie you think it is (aka. another penguin movie with dumb jokes). Apparently it is worth checking out.

Wia response!

As I mentioned in yesterday's meeting, I did email them about commenting on the official WIA blog.

This is the response I got:

The reason we don't have the comments section open right now is because we've had a problem with spam in the past. We are going to figure out a way that people can be more involved with the blog itself, but for now we're leaving the comments closed. But I promise, either comments or some kind of discussion board will be up soon.

Mime?

The Reader mentions this for Saturday night, which might be a good thing for observing timing:

BILLY THE MIME "I hate mimes," Billy the Mime has said. Blaming "bad practitioners" for the form's reputation as pretentious and boring, he says mime can challenge and amuse. Watch his scene in The Aristocrats, cocreated by longtime friend Penn Jillette, and you'll likely agree--mimes are known for pressing their palms against invisible boxes, not gleefully humping small dogs. Billy is the alter ego of Fresno native Steven Banks, who studied under Marcel Marceau and attended Ringling Brothers clown college in the early 80s. After an unnamed injury, he says, he ditched mime to focus on acting, music, and writing--all on display in Showtime's Home Entertainment Center, aired in 1989, and in The Steven Banks Show, a 1994 PBS sitcom. From 1998 through 2004 Banks wrote for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network and for a time was head writer for SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2004 he returned to mime, building a repertoire of witty, irreverent vignettes. Drawing on world history ("Jesus: The Last Days"), current events ("Columbine: School's Out"), and fantasy ("Dreams of a Young Crippled Boy"), Billy is a dazzling showman with masterful mime skills and brilliant comic timing. Sketch Crawl-Sketches

Hi all these are some of the sketches that I did. Enjoy ;). From the bottom to top. The first one is actually of my aunts house in Mexico. I was remembering it that day on the train. The second and third are at the pizza place that we ate at. The fourth is from Dunkin Donuts. This last one I drew at DD two, but it was suppose to be a tired out person, but everybody said it looked like a homeless person. LOL.

thanks Gabe

Opps! I forgot to add this picture to my previous post. Here's another group photo- this time with Gabe- he's the one who put the show together. So, thanks Gabe! here's an article about how it became: http://www.pioneerlocal.com/parkridge/entertainment/396383,dc-animation-052407-s1.article

Then Kristine showed up, so we got another:

After the 1:00 show, we were really hungry and started the sketchcrawl getting pizza:
